Dhoni, Ravichandran Ashwin help India crush Australia in 1st Test

India beat Australia in 1st Test series in Chennai

India emerged winners from their first Test against Australia, taking a 1-0 lead in the four match series. India beat Australia by eight wickets and Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was crowned Man of the Match in Chennai.

The Indian team ended Australian team’s resistant last-wicket partnership between Moises Henriques and Nathan Lyon in nine overs on Tuesday, February 26. In its first innings Australia made 380 runs – thanks to the Henriques-Lyon partnership. In its second innings it made a total of 241 after the pair was dismissed in the first 25 minutes.

Meanwhile India, in its first innings posted a total of 572 runs and crossed 50 runs in the second innings in just over 11 overs.

Dhoni was named Man of the Match for his 224 runs in the first innings before he was dismissed by James Pattinson. Bowler Ravichandran Ashwin took seven wickets and delivered 12 maiden overs at an economy rate of 2.50.

Cheteshwar Pujara and Sachin Tendulkar sealed the victory in the second innings by scoring the required runs in 11.3 overs.

The India vs Australia second Test will be played between March 2 and March 6 in Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International stadium. The Australian team had expressed concerns about the test series in Hyderabad in the wake of the twin bomb attacks last week in Dilsukhnagar but decided to go ahead with the game.
