Samar, directed by Thiru, was scheduled for a 2012 release but was postponed to the New Year after it ran into financial and legal troubles.

The word samar in Tamil means ‘war’ and the Vishal-Trisha project ran into trouble as another producer laid claims to the title first for his movie. In another controversy, it also emerged that Samar’s producer had allegedly not paid distributors their commission for overseas marketing of the film.

The film finally got a green light to release for Pongal to average reviews while Trisha and Vishal’s performance received positive feedback on the social media.

From the trailer it emerges that Samar is a story about Shakti (Vishal) who goes to Bangkok in search of his girlfriend. Once in Bangkok, he is mistaken to be someone else (also by the name Shakti) who is involved in violent activities. Vishal’s physical appearance is strikingly similar to the other person and he loses trust from even his loved ones despite his constant efforts to convince them he is not the same person. The action-thriller then goes to reveal the suspense towards the end.

Ahead of the release, Trisha posted on Twitter: “Samar will be releasing worldwide on Jan 13 both in Tamil and Telugu.”

On the day of the release, she added: “Missed u so much today Dad. You always watch the FDFS [First Day First Show] with us...guess u still must be.” The Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya actress’s father Krishnan passed away in October last year after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest.
