Author and former Bollywood actor Twinkle Khanna has highlighted the issues around sanitary pads affordability in her interview with UK's BBC World News while promoting her upcoming film Padman starring Akshay Kumar.

Twinkle Khanna shares facts and figures on the state of menstrual hygiene around the world while talking to BBC:

Padman, produced by Twinkle Khanna is directed by R Balki and also stars Sonam Kapoor and radhika Apte in key roles. The film is based on the life of a social activist from Tamil Nadu called Arunachalam Muruganantham, who created a low-cost sanitary napkins machine and revolutionized the concept of menstrual hygiene in rural India. He was driven to make menstrual hygiene affordable after seeing his wife and many women in rural India compromising on hygiene because of costs. Twinkle Khanna's bestselling book The Legend of Lakshmi Prasad is inspired by Arunachalam. The film aims to celebrate the true story of a "real hero" or a real-life superman.

The film is scheduled to release in January 2018. According to Twinkle Khanna, inability to buy affordable sanitary pads and the issues around 'Menstrual Tax' are not just problems in India but are global.

Known for her wit, Twinkle, also known via her Twitter handle Mrs Funnybones, she said: "The true story of a superhero #Padman 26-1-2018. A magnificent tale of determination and hope that will both entertain and educate-Period!" and shared stills from the film on Twitter.

The comedy-drama film Padman will also feature Amitabh Bachchan in a special appearance. The film was shot in Delhi primarily.
